As you drive east along Lakeshore
Boulevard into South Etobicoke, the Humber Bay waterfront presents some of the most
dramatic vistas of the Toronto skyline that you can find. In the 1920s the area boasted a grand lakefront amusement pier called
Palace Pier to rival the renowned Sunnyside Pavillion. The pier was a collection of
various structures in a lavish Moroccan style projecting well out over the water some 1800
feet and terminated in a steamboat landing. With the financial difficulties of the
1930s plans stalled until 1941, when a redesigned first phase of the amusement pier
was constructed and opened to the public. It was an immediate success and became wildly
popular as a major Toronto dance hall in World War II showcasing big bands. The Palace
Pier was destroyed by fire in 1963 and no restoration was undertaken.
In recent years, South Etobicoke and the Humber Bay
waterfront have been undergoing a major revitalization becoming a desired residential area
especially for Lakefront Condominiums. Its easy access to both downtown Toronto and
to Mississauga as well as Etobicokes own economic base the Humber Bay strip, as it
was known is now a bustling residential condominium community offering many of the best |
