Dining in the Entertainment District

Well, I continue to be confused by the Canadian approach to doing business.   Many of my international clients had requested that we include restaurant referrals showing their locations on our very successful interactive mapping.

I met a young salesman who was ready to take this concept to the street emphasizing that my clients take up 100% of my time and that, although I felt integrating a visitor industry component into our web site proved a sound business model (Toronto’s tourism industry is not overly well served), I simply would not be available to assist him in meeting with and working with this community.

Well, we produced a bunch of marketing material and had lots of meetings and strategy sessions and finally got my young aspiring superstar out into the field.   I had my graphic artist create additional interactive mapping designed to allow visitors to see where to dine and entertain themselves before they move here and/or even visit to view properties.

With in excess of 15,000 “Hits” Per Day we bring a very high quality Internet visitor who is already contemplating spending in excess of a quarter million dollars (many purchases in the millions of dollars) to move into the downtown Toronto area.

Today I heard from Adam that he had received a narrative delivered via voice mail (while he was away working on his real estate license course) from the General Manager of the Holiday Inn who allegedly (he represented) is the Head of the Entertainment District Marketing Association.

The “Reader’s Digest” version of this man’s rambling narrative set out his apparent opposition to having our successful website promote not only the Entertainment District but also the businesses that form this District FREE OF CHARGE following which he proposed a meeting to discuss his position.   I don’t know about you but I simply don’t have the time or patience to pamper people with this much time on their hands.

Apparently, because of a small, one time production fee (if I gave you a FREE billboard on the highway would you condemn me for requiring that you pay for the production of your ad????) the head of the Entertainment Districts Marketing Association felt comfortable accusing my salesman of some kind of “Bait and Switch”.    The entire module being produced has already been underwritten by me!   I have already photographed most of the commercial venues and uploaded a comprehensive list of businesses from the public domain.

Would a rational person take such an arbitrary stance and then invite a meeting to discuss the illogic of their intellectual position?   We really do not have the time to face the type of uphill grind required to deliver meaningful objective information to our clients and web visitors.   Obviously, like developers, restaurants, hotels, shops and their associations would much rather regulate the information exchange.

Stay tuned as I will personally start delivering restaurant and hotel critiques to assist my clients coming to the city.   They have requested this information and we will definitely accumulate it for them but not out of the commercially slanted advertising and/or advertorials underwritten by these marketing associations.

Talk soon.
