Theatre - Entertainment District

Canada's largest and most cosmopolitan city is well-known as the third largest (New York and London having stated their claim to first and second place many years ago) theatre districts in the English-speaking world.

The range of venues is impressive. There are grandeose 2,000-seat theatres hosting major productions and touring musicals; mid-sized theatres featuring internationally-known comedy troupes (Second City); drama and dinner theatre; and concert halls for symphony, dance and opera, and the SkyDome hosts music concerts.

Two major theatrical musical extravaganzas - Disney's The Lion King and Mamma Mia have been playing to sold-out houses (Princess of Wales Theatre, the first privately-built theatre in North America in more than 30 years, and the stately refurbished elegance of the Royal Alexandra Theatre) for several years.

There is also the Hummingbird Centre, host to many large touring Broadway productions. Concert halls range from the spectacular Roy Thomson Hall to the intimate 200-seat Glenn Gould Theatre/Recording studio in the CBC national headquarters.
