Hanging out in Toronto's North York area

The North York area is the central part of the Northern half of Toronto. Its population stands at 624,610 and is the second-largest of six municipalities. North York was formed in the 1920s. As the years went by North York became more urbanized. It became a Region of North York in 1967.

Although a lot of the area still remains a suburban nature efforts were made to strengthen the development of the area. The North York Centre area was built along Yonge St. between Finch and Sheppard Avenues. Resembling a smaller version of the Toronto’s Downtown Core, world-renowned corporations built their offices in the city of North York. Some corporations include Proctor & Gamble, Equifax and McDonald’s of Canada.

Major shopping malls include; Yorkdale Mall and Fairview Mall. Smaller shopping malls include; Centre Point Mall, Jane & Finch Mall and The Sheppard Centre.

Condos were limited to a narrow strip consisting of Yonge Street and a block on either side of Yonge. On the east side of Yonge St. is Doris and most condos are found on this quiet street.

The center of it all rests at Empress Centre. The area has a predominant Chinese population and offers much of what is available to you downtown in the way of entertainment, dining, and shopping. The subway connects it to downtown and Markham’s high tech industry is an easy commute making North York quite appealing to many people.
