Hanging
out in Toronto's Queen West Area
Queen Street was the baseline for the original east-west avenues of Toronto's grid outline
of major streets. The west end of Queen (referred to as "Queen West") is known
as a centre for Canadian broadcasting, music, performance, fashion, and the visual arts.
Over the past 25 years, Queen West has become an international arts centre, and a major
tourist attraction in Toronto. Queen Street West at Yonge Street has been one of Toronto's
primary shopping destinations. At first, the Eaton's and Simpson's department stores faced
each other across Queen Street. The pedestrian crosswalk on Queen Street, just to the west
of the intersection of Yonge Street, was one of the busiest in Canada, as thousands of
shoppers a day shopped between Eaton's and Simpson's.
Today, Eaton's is gone by the wayside, but the Toronto Eaton Centre still stands at the
same location, one of Canada's largest office and shopping complexes to this day. Also,
Simpson's is gone, but the historic department store building remains on the south side of
Queen Street, vacant by The Bay department store. The area offers an exciting mix of
contemporary fashion and design stores along with restaurants, bars and coffee shops.
Queen West is one of the citys most eclectic areas. If you are looking for tatooed
and/or body pierced crowd (for example) youll want to check out this area. Ideal for
the yonge and hip generation the area does offer some unique and trendy residential
alternatives.
The Quest by Tridel for example is still an
excellent buy and some new harder lofts on John have proven a big demand item
in the area. District Lofts, and Phoebe On Queen are a couple of local condos that one
would want to know of.
