It really doesn’t matter what you drive, moving to a
new city introduces a lot of necessities that one doesn’t really think of and one of
these (right up there with doctors and dentists in my books) is finding an honest and
reliable service technician for your car.
From my perspective Mercedes is the obvious choice if
budgets permit. My first Mercedes was a classic 1972 SEL 4.5 when I first moved back to
Toronto in the early 1980’s. A struggling salesman at the time, my budgets did not
meet the retail costs of a new machine. I quickly learned that keeping the car running
right was almost as important as being able to buy it. The solution at that time for me
was Lou Forli, a charismatic Italian gentleman with a small shop at Parliament and
Richmond Streets.
Today, I wouldn’t consider buying a Mercedes without
Lou inspecting it. I actually just changed to an S500 in immaculate condition. We had the
seller take the car to Lou and within minutes, having taken the wheels off and inspecting
it from stem to stern, I was given the green light. Lou has a very sound understanding of
delivering the vital service that he delivers: "don’t fix it if it’s not
broken" and "certainly don’t pay him to have it fixed if its not
broken".
It’s very hard to find someone dependable to entrust
your maintenance to. It is also difficult to buy a used and/or classic Mercedes and Forli
