In 1951, famed architect A. Herbert Mathes designed "The Allison" on the ocean (now renamed Cabana: A Private Beach Retreat), at 62nd Street and Collins Avenue. The Allison hotel gained fame as a prime example of the new kind of resort architecture, reflected by vibrant colors, curves and angles. These exotic structures also enticed the rich and famous, and those lucky enough probably caught a glimpse of the Rat Pack, Jackie Gleason, Joan Crawford, or even the Beatles... all visitors to Miami's originals MiMo hotels. Signature elements of MiMo architecture include porte cocheres, curved concrete cutouts and asymmetry. Renowned architects Charles Sieger and Jose Suarez of The Sieger Suarez Architectural Partnership become the first to take on an historic restoration of MiMo architecture in the North Beach Historic District in Spring 2004. As part of the historic renovation, the architects added two floors, extended the building in the rear, and added balconies. The firm also infused modern and functional architectural elements, such as a raised pool deck, which cleverly hides parking underneath and allows a gorgeous seamless view of water from pool to ocean.
